A great pad for less May 09, 2007

This is a great product. I went to the ALPS site and really felt good about the company too. Unless it was just a marketing ploy, it is a family-run business with connections to Kelty. I use the shorty pad with a z-fold under it for hard surfaces or while car camping, but it is plenty thick enough to handle the job by itself. It is well designed with great materials and looks and functions just like a top of the line model. My GF got a pad from EMS for +$10 that just sucks compared to this one. I am very happy with it and appreciate supporting a family business.

Great combination of features Apr 20, 2010
By Kevin Delibero Backround: Im a 6ft 2in male hiker that goes 240lbs. I have been hiking since I was a teenager (20+ years) I hike mostly in the north east and do so year round.
Item reviewed: Alps Mountaineering Lightweight series air pad size Regular. 20"x72"x1.5" listed weight 2 lbs. 5 oz.
I love this pad! You have to look at it for what it is. Yes it is a little heavier than the ultra light pads out there but it also is more durable and thicker. It gives a great night sleep for the weight. I have had all kinds of pads that self inflate as well as closed cell foam and have found the combination of comfort to weight ratio to be the best with this pad. What good is saving 8oz in your backpack if you are going to spend all night tossing and turning because you are uncomfortable. A good nights sleep is worth a few extra ounces.
I hear alot of people have issues getting this pad small again after inflateing it. This is easy to remedy. relese air valve. Fold pad in half lengthwise. Lay on it until air stops comming out. Tighten air valve. Fold bottom 1/3 up to top 2/3 and lay on it again. Release valve and purge more air. tighten valve and fold the top third down. lay on it and release valve until all air is out. Retighten valve. now it is flat and you can roll or fold it however suits you and your packing style best.
See you on the trail.

Decent, Affordable Sleeping Pad Aug 21, 2008
By Robert J. Moore

The ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight regular pad is a decent self-inflating pad for the price. I'm 5'9" and average build and the pad is the right size for me - my whole body fits easily on the pad. The comfort is fine for a 2.5 lb self-inflating pad. It smooths out the ground and provides insulation from the ground. It seems as good a quality as the more expensive pads sold at REI, Gander Mountain etc. I'm a hiker/light backpacker so this pad provides decent comfort, light weight, and a price I'm willing to pay.
A couple notes:
The pressure valve will shut itself from time to time as you deflate the pad; not a big issue, just a note.
Also, the pad cover is a bit slick so I slid off the pad while sleeping in a slight incline. I will most likely buy a sleeping bag that allows me to put the pad in a pocket on the bottom of the bag.
For those who are not familiar with sleeping pads, the self-inflating pads have a hollow foam core which creates a vacuum when deflated. Then when you release the valve, air is sucked back into the pad over several minutes. You can also blow more air into it to make it firmer. If you really need a super light pad, I would suggest a pad that you have to manually inflate - they are much lighter but require blowing up. If you are a car camper and like lots of comfort and don't need to hike with it, I suggest a much thicker and heavier pad.
pleased Jul 24, 2008
By H. Barling I am pleased with this purchase. It was less expensive than many others like it, and it arrived very quickly. It was comfortable, and lightweight. My only complaint is that I read somewhere that it rolls/folds up very small (10 inches or something) and it does not. It rolls up, but it is not compact. It is still 20'' long when you roll it up, and still kind of puffy.
as good as thermarest Jul 12, 2008

I am very happy with this pad, I bought the short model and it is every bit as good as a thermarest at a fraction of the cost. If packed size is your most important factor, buy a thermarest prolite 3, if you can handle a packed roll 6"dia. x 11" long, this is your pad.
