5No review can adaquately praise the Camelbak, but here are some tips on how to choose which one to get.  May 17, 2007
By John P. Thiel "John T."
There are very few products of a specific brand for which there are no substitutes, and the Camelbak is one such rare product.

First, some bullet points of praise for the Camelbak:

-They improve this thing every year, and yet the old ones are fantastic as well.
-Weight is negligable--the actual backpack and bladder are truly feather light.
-Even without ice or other insulation, cold drinks stay cold and hot drinks stay fairly hot for hours. Ice stays icy--it effectively wont melt.

Get the H.A.W.G. if you're a year round, all weather athlete (hiking, cycling, skiing) because it will give you enough room for your spare jacket, hat, gloves, thermafleece, polar fleece or just about anything short of a weekend outing's worth of stuff.

If you only go out in nice, warm weather then get a Camelbak M.U.L.E.--enough room for your tools, sun screen, a camera, and that's it.

The H.A.W.G. will pack small with the compression straps pulled in, and still have plenty of room for picking up a bag of groceries on the way home. It's the perfect pack for a day trip, picnic, or going to events in a major city.

BOTTOM LINE: I really can't say enough about how good this item is, except that I'd be very hesitant to buy or recommend any other brand of hydration pack. If you want a hydration pack that's also a smartly designed, great backpack, then you have to get a Camelbak--there is nothing similar.

5Plenty of room & durable  Nov 12, 2007
By Jeff Long "delrey23"
this pack has room for 2 full size textbooks and a spiral bound notebook, with little pockets for things like ipods and such...plus the water! i can carry everything i need for a long day at school and stay hydrated. i wish the zippers were a little more heavy duty, but it feels rugged enough to last a while.it fits nice and tight and there's plenty of padding to make the pack feel light and natural - almost like you're not even wearing it.i would recommend this for someone who wants the camelbak water handy and to be able to put a few things in the bag. if you're looking to put a lot of things in the bag, get something bigger.

5One of the best bike purchases I've made!  Jun 09, 2008
By Paul R. Lanhart "konaboy"
I've always been a fan of Camelbak products but have tried many others as well. This bag seals the deal for me, though! I use this for my daily commute which runs about 20 miles one way and I carry light clothes, wallet, phone, keys, etc. It has plenty of room without being too big. It's really about the perfect size for a commuter or for day-long rides.

It's very comfortable with good adjustments available. In fact, it's the most comfortable hydration pack I've worn, even when it's packed pretty full. The 'Air Director' air flow design works very well and keeps your back fairly well ventilated. I think they thought out the pockets very well, also. It seems to have the right combination of a big roomy storage area along with a variety of pockets for keys, gloves, wallets, etc. I also like how you can allow the main storage to expand or cinch it up for a sleeker, more compact bag if you're not using the space.

One little thing a lot of people don't notice on bike bags is where they place the carrying strap/handle. Camelbak smartly places it slightly lower (not directly on top) and more on the front side. This is important for us mountain bikers who often duck under a tree branch or two. If the handle is sticking up it can get caught very easy and pull you right off your bike. Because of that, I've cut them off on other bags. I don't have to worry about that on this bag.

The water bag and related components are typical high-quality Camelbak components. They don't disappoint. Some folks have commented that they don't like the access for filling the water bag. I haven't found it to be cumbersome at all and I would rather fill the bag from the opposite side of the storage in case I accidentally spill some water. You can also remove the bag quite easily and fill it that way. It works well.

VERY smartly designed bag and I HIGHLY recommend it!

5great pack  Oct 18, 2007

Very happy with my H.A.W.G., very well built, lots of compartments, not to big, but large enough to carry everything you would need on day hikes.
Got a good price due to the color choice, which looks just fine.

5Absolutely excellent for Mountain Biking  Apr 26, 2009
By turbine boosted
Let me just say that before I got the H.A.W.G. model, I owned a CamelBak Men's Lobo 3-Liter Hydration Pack, which, as you compare and read the reasons listed below, I was very happy to upgrade from.

There are a total of seven (7) compartments on this pack:

1) The back one, contains and seals the hydration pack.
2) The main large one, which I have stuffed in two 26inch slime tubes, a handheld pump, a shock pump, an extra chain, a first aid kit, and all my cellphone/wallet/key necessities. Before riding, it also fits my sunglasses, gloves, protective pads (elbow, shin). PLENTY of room left.
3) Two side pockets with zipper. I honestly cannot find a use for these, but they are there. I guess I could pack snacks or gel for the 20+ mile rides, but for now, I am thinking they could serve as a quick access points for camera, GPS, or trail maps.
4) A front zipped pocket. This serves as my tool shed. Bike tools, wrenches, extra chain links, tire levers, all goes in here.
5) A meshed quick access front pocket, with a locking strap. I don't necessarily like anything in here (just so it doesn't fly out on those tech terrains). Again, more room if I need it.
6) An MP3 player pocket. I don't necessarily listen to music when I ride, but this easily fits an iPhone.

The camelbak holds up to 3 liters (100 ounces) of your favorite fluid, with its tube easily routed to your favorite side. It is very easy to take the hydration pack out. Unzip the back pocket, disconnect and remove the tubing, and you can remove and replace or clean the entire pack. So far it's been very durable and well protected. My advice is to have the pack facing inwards where the tube comes out, as to not having it press against your back!

I honestly cannot see any weaknesses. I am a big guy and this things straps on to me and holds tight even on the most technical terrain. A bit pricey maybe, but I did find it on sale for 56$ at my local bike shop. However, I would have happily paid the full MSRP for this (around $100 I think). You will not be disappointed.
