5quality as usual  Aug 17, 2007
By John Sevier "yukonboy03"
this is my second camelbak to own, and consider that i am not replacing my first (ventoux) but rather making some variety in size and form. both are of the highest quality and have seen me through many situations: motorcycling, mt biking from telluride to moab, road biking an ms150, and college life for two years to name a few. the zippers are stong, the features are nice, and the amount of cargo space is deceiving in a good way. the octane is great so far as i am concerned. and plus it is always nice they include a good camelbak bladder inside.

5Awesome backpack for urban adventures and day hikes  Sep 30, 2009
By N. Hawkins "whereishawkins"
I use this as my day pack when I travel around the world. I can comfortably hold a big digital SLR, various junk, some travel books and whatever else I need for the day while running around an exotic city.

One of the things I keep forgetting to do is hydrate, and when you're active you forget how much water you lose. I used this bag in Egypt when it was 110 out and I was sweating buckets. I like the 3 liter capacity - I fill it to the brim and suck it down throughout the day.

It's a low profile bag, but the fact that it can unzip and expand is helpful. As a photography buff, sometimes you just have to cram extra accessories or a jacket in your bag. I'm surprised at how deceptive the Octane 14+ is when it comes to holding gear. The two pockets on the hip come in handy for a phone, keys and the little things.

The bag's a great buy if you need a good daypack, or even a commuter backpack.

4Great pack - but only for certain uses  Oct 22, 2008
By SDM Matt "SDM Guy"
This is a wonderful pack, but not for everyone. If you are looking for a small/medium capacity pack and you want to move fast, this is the right bag for you. It is low drag and conforms to your body. If you want something with large capacity or the option to strap gear on the outside, however, maybe another pack would be more optimal. Another affect of being low profile is that it doesn't have a nice square cavern to pack into, there is plenty of space, but it is around the sides, top and bottom of the pack. The water bladder takes up room in the middle. I got stuff sacks to help load it in an organized way and they really help.

5Exactly what I needed  Jul 17, 2008
By Micheal Mathews
I have the smaller version of this pack, which is great for light loads.
Unfortunately, at the time I needed to be able to change out of my work clothes (business casual) so I could ride my bike 15 miles home everyday. On top of that there were times when, riding home at night through DC, I wanted to bring my camera gear. The smaller pack was just a little bit too... small.

This one however is perfect, holds everything nicely and has the features I liked such as the side pockets for keys, phone, mp3 player, etc., as well as the collapsing/expanding compartment.

This is a great pack for bikers/hikers that need to carry a slightly larger load, it can easily fit a full change of clothes (w/shoes) as well as some food and supplies.

And if you dont need the extra space, collapse it down to a size that's slightly flatter and more compact than your average backpack for school kids.

Add the 100oz water pack and for my money this is a winner.

Good buy.

5Great!  Jun 27, 2008
By Loraksus
I tend to pack a lot of stuff, and should of have probably got a larger one, but that's not the fault of the pack. I think it looks bigger online than it really is, so maybe drop by a local bike store or something - but you'll probably see an extra $100 in the price tag.
Still, holds plenty.

Having the water next to your back is great - cooling and comfortable.

Camelbak customer service is excellent.

The only "con" is that it looks a bit awkward on fat people (i.e. 260 pound me). Incentive to lose weight ;)
