Great For Birding May 26, 2010

The Carson Adventure Pak is a great birding kit for youth. The binocular is 5x30, which is good for birding and good for children. The lower magnification means less "handshake", and a more stable image. Also, this binocular is a smaller size which is good for younger hands. Most of the items in this adventure kit seem durable and well made. The cord for the binocular is thin, but seems sturdy. The only problem I have discovered so far, is that the thermometer on the whistle does not work. I bought two kits at the same time (one for each of my children) and both of their thermometers read 80 degrees at all times, even inside our home. I am not going to return these kits over a defective thermometer. My main reason for this purchase was to provide my children with a decent pair of binoculars, all the other stuff was just a bonus.
Contents: Binocular (5x30) with flip-down eye cups and neck cord, whistle with built-in thermometer, flashlight, compass, lens cleaning cloth, and carry pouch for all items.
Pros:
The binocular works well and is sturdy.
The flashlight works and seems sturdy enough for my kids.
The compass is cool, and my kids have loved using it to find out which direction we are walking.
The carry pouch is a MUST for children to keep all the items together. It is made of thin material, but I don't foresee my kids ripping or tearing it any time soon (they are ages 7 and 9).
Cons:
The thermometer doesn't work on the whistle (I bought two kits, and neither one worked).
The carry case for the kit does not have a shoulder strap. It does have a loop for wearing on a belt and it has hand strap sewn down inside the main compartment of the pouch, but my children don't normally wear belts and the hand strap makes for a bulky nuisance hanging off the wrist when they are trying to bird-watch. It would have been better if the carry case had a shoulder strap.
I gave this item 5 stars despite the two cons that I listed. This was a great purchase for my kids and they are each happy to own their first pair of binoculars. It was cool to see my son run to get his binoculars when he saw a large Cattle Egret land in our front yard this morning.
I also purchased Fun With Nature (Take-Along Guide). This book combined with the Carson Adventure Pak will get any child on their way to discovering nature while having fun. I recommended both purchases!
Awesome first explorer kit!! Jan 25, 2012
By scotianabroad My four year old daughter LOVES this kit! The binnoculars are perfect for small hands and very easy to adjust for young eyes to see far away. Compass and flashlight are a little cheap, but for the price they meet my approval. Definitely more for play and exploring than accuracy. Wish the carry case had a strap instead of belt loop, but otherwise super happy with this purchase.
Great Starter Set Dec 13, 2011
By Mommy Jessup This item arrived packaged securely, in great shape and is a perfect starter set. The binoculars require no adjusting and are clear. The compass works adequately and is a great beginner compass to learn how to properly use one. Instructions are packaged with the kit to teach proper use. The whistle is a cute addition to alert others and the thermometer works with Farenheit on one side and Celcius on the other. The flashlight, although small, is a perfect size for little hands and provides adequate light. I think that this is an awesome beginner set and it comes with a package to keep it all neatly tucked inside with a loop to attach to a back pack or belt. After seeing the set, I wished that I had ordered an extra set or two and recommend it if you will have other siblings or friends over to explore with your child.

I gave this five stars instead of four because they are toys; everything in my grandson's set works and reasonably well. I would not want to stake my like on them but if I was in a situation they were all I had I would trust them. The compass works and is true, the binoculars are about as hight a power as a young child can hold steady, the flashlight works but I think is the least durable of the items in the set, the whistle is loud enough to be a life saver and the thermometer works and is fairly accurate. Most important my four year old grandson loves them.
Disappointing quality Feb 03, 2011
By Susan E. Trask My 9-year old grandson is really into outdoor adventuring, so I looked long and hard to select some gear for him for Christmas. I was a bit disppointed by the general look of the kit, but the actual gear looked okay. BUT -- the strap that holds the kit onto a belt broke the very first time he tried to put it on! He was so disappointed to not be able to use his new gift right away. I took the case home and re-sewed the strap -- but was not at all happy to have to do so! Since then he's taken his kit with him to his outdoor club and enjoyed using it.
