About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of ski-wear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that, it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

2disappointing quality  Jul 01, 2010
By Bryan Jacoby
I just purchased this sleeping bag and I'm afraid I am not as impressed as the previous reviewers.

First, a clarification: the Amazon page for this product first states that the liner is cotton, and later that it is polyester. The bag I received has a polyester liner.

My main complaint is that one of the quilting stitches (that goes across the bag to hold the insulation in place) was coming apart in two places such that the slightest tug at the threads would cause it to unravel further. I expect that the seam would have unraveled completely with a little use or a washing. We need to use the bag this weekend (no time to return/exchange) so we fixed the stitching ourselves, but this is very disappointing.

Also, while it is true that the bag has draft tubes along the zipper, I noticed that the body insulation does not quite go all the way to the edge of the bag. Not much point in having a draft tube if there is a 1" uninsulated strip next to it.

After fixing the stitching I think this bag will serve us well for indoor "camping" and the occasional warm summer night in the back yard, the price was great, and as always Campmor provided excellent service. But Columbia's quality control is very disappointing and if I had it to do over again I would choose something else.

5My 3 yr old son LOVES his sleeping bag  Oct 10, 2007
By E. Patermo "Eric P."
I wanted to find a quality bag at a good price so that my son could get used to sleeping in a bag for when we go camping. I had him choose the color so that he would be part of the decision making process. Anyway, he loves his bag and has to have it on his bed every night. Many nights he sleeps under the bag instead of his covers. so far, I am impressed with the quality and durability of it. Overall, a winner.

5Wonderful child-sized sleeping bag  Jan 13, 2007
By Gong Gong in CA
We purchased this sleeping bag for our 5 year old grandson for Christmas. He loves it. In fact, he said, "This wasn't so much a want as a NEED!" It is the perfect size for a child and is not at all babyish. It is a quality product.
