Cool idea - bad design Sep 14, 2007
By Mike Mcdermott i took this to europe for a few weeks, i really liked the idea of two bags zipping into one unit. over all a good bag, and i really like that the larger of the two pieces has a shoulder strap (like a suitcase) and compartment to hide the shoulder straps. the biggest problem, and reason i would not use it for backpacking again, is it is not balanced.
when full and zipped into one bag, it is top-heavy, and sticks out way too far behind you. basically, it pulls you backwards, so you must lean forward a bit to feel balanced with your center of gravity. i read a review that mentioned this issue, disregarded it, and now feel it was seriously under-emphasized.

A good bag and a good value May 29, 2007
By Scott I purchased this bag for a two-week trip around Greece and found it to be great for my needs. It's relatively roomy, yet the main pack just meets carry-on requirements and the small day-pack easily fits under an airplane seat. It's pretty comfortable to wear, with nicely padded straps on the main pack and good straps on the detachable day-pack. The shoulder strap is convenient as well--the main bag can be carried as a shoulder bag or with the padded suitcase handle if desired. The day-pack can also be clipped onto the front of the bag, which can be good both for security and to distribute weight more evenly.
The bag was also pretty durable, although one of the metal clips on the shoulder strap came off when the strap got caught in an airport x-ray machine (not sure this is really the bag's fault though).
Overall I am quite satisfied, especially for the price. Just keep in mind this is a travel bag--it's great for carrying on your back from hotel to hotel while traveling, but it's not one you would want to be wearing 100% of the time on your trip. (A metal-frame hiking-oriented pack might be better for that purpose.)

used this bag around the world Jan 01, 2008
By A. Nomad It worked well enough that I used it for a 10 and 1/2 month trip. Depending on the airline, the main bag is small enough that, when separated from the day pack, it can be used as a carry-on. However, again it depends on the airline and aircraft. (Some airlines only allow 1 carry-on bag, and some airlines have smaller size allowances for carry-on luggage.) I bought a small bag so I could carry it on, but I quickly found myself checking it anyway because of the liquid restrictions on carry-on luggage. Also, even though it is small it's cumbersome to have to keep it with you in the airport. It's just easier to give it to the airlines and let them deal with it.
If you intend on putting locks on the zippers note that you can do so but the zipper handles are made of fabric and not metal, so anyone with a pair of scissors could cut it and get in your bag. (However, I never had anything stolen.) Also, there is no way to lock the sunglasses holder on the day pack.
The bag is pretty comfortable IMHO. I fit a small laptop (VAIO TX series with 11.1 inch screen) in the day pack.
If you want a bag that will force you to pack lightly, get this bag. It held up fairly well--i.e. nothing broke. However, after over 20 flights and using this bag every day for the better part of a year, it's showing a good amount of wear and tear. Next time I travel I will get a bag that's just a tiny bit bigger, has metal zipper handles, has mesh pockets on the outside of the daypack. Lastly, I think it would be good to have a bag that has a pull-out waterproof cover; this one doesn't.
All in all, for the money it's a great bag.

Pretty good bag Jun 19, 2007
By Abe This is pretty good travel bag. Very comfortable and has good space. I used to for some 4 day trips and it is handy when you are planning to use public transportation. You can take off the extra bag if not needed to reduce the size and not carrying this big odd thing on domestic trips.
The reason I gave this a 4 star is that the main compartment doesn't have any pockets at all.
Regardless I think it is a good bag and looks pretty decent when carrying around.

High Sierra 23" travel bag May 31, 2009
By Chris I purchased this bag for a two week trip through Europe. France, Germany, and Italy. For convenience, security, and peace of mind, I didn't want to check any of my luggage at the airport. With this bag, the large pack went in the overhead, and the small daybag went under the seat. This pack will also force you to pack light. That is a good thing.
As previously mentioned, the zipper pulls won't work well with padlocks. I purchased some Hog rings and inserted them in the zippers, so that I could use a lock on the zippers. This cost less than $10 to do.
I have no previous backpacking experience, but I was fairly comfortable wearing this through train stations and while walking to Hostels or wherever, to drop off the main bag.
Although the two bags can be zipped together to form one big bag, I have no Idea why anyone would want to do that. It would make it cumbersome and off balance. The small bag is intended to clip to the front straps of the big bag, so that it is positioned across your chest. Wearing it this way was very comfortable, convenient, and balanced, and also left my hands free.
If this travel bag had any downfalls, it is that the small backpack should have a water bottle pouch, the large backpack should have a couple small compartments,
