Lodge Quality, Worth the Price Jun 15, 2010 I purchased this Lodge 4qt Camp Dutch Oven with two things in mind. First I've wanted to try and make busciuts in a camp dutch oven ever since I watched the movie "Lonesome Dove", and saw Gus cooking busciuts in a dutch oven in a campfire. Well this last weekend I finally did it. But I did it with briquettes, 2/3 on the top and 1/3 bottom, not a campfire. It was fairly easy, and the biscuits came out wonderful. Second, I intend to try and make peach cobbler. I waiting to get some fresh peaches before attemting the cobbler. I own a larger 8qt deep dutch oven for stews, ribs, roast, etc., but the 4qt is a good size for buscuits and the cobblers. There are tons of recipies on the internet. So I say go buy a Lodge dutch oven, find some recipes you might like and start cooking outdoors. Listen to the birds chirp, feel the sun, breath the air, then eat really well. There will be some trial and error involved, but it's totally fun to learn a new way to cook!

Solid, versatile, great dutch oven Jul 13, 2009 I have wanted a camp dutch oven for a long time and finally treated myself. I did a lot of research and choose the Lodge camp model for several reasons. The company has a great name and has been in business for generations. The customer reviews on this product were all positive. I have used my dutch oven several times INDOORS in my kitchen oven and it works great for baking No Knead Bread (the New York Times recipe). It fits right onto the oven rack. We took it camping and because of the three sturdy legs, you can do all sorts of camp, outdoor cooking. Also, my research indicated that the vast majority of dutchoven recipes are written for the 6-quart oven, so I recomend getting that one. That way, you won't have to spend lots of time converting recipe measurements in to your different-sized oven. (By the way, the Lodge oven comes with a terrific instruction manual which includes dozens of great recipes and exact instructions on how many coals to put on top and underneath.)
I absolutely recommend that you also buy the lid lifter and the lid holder. The lifter is designed to lift the heavy, very hot lid off in a balanced way, so no ash falls in to your meal. The lid holder/rester gives you a place to place the heavy lid when you are cooking outdoors and need to check or stir what you are cooking. Another great aspect is that you can turn the lid holder upside down, place coals around it, place the dutch oven lid on inverted, and use the lid as a griddle! Great for versatile camp cooking without bringing a camp stove or fry pan along.
The oven is very heavy, and when you add the lifter and holder, it is a lot to store and carry. I put ours in an old but sturdy canvas bag and that works great for easy transport. Enjoy!
Wonderful Product Jun 04, 2009 I love cooking in my new dutch oven. I used it for the first time this last weekend on my camping trip. I made a pot roast one night for dinner. The next morning for breakfast I baked biscuits. It cleans up easily with a vingar/water spray. However, I need to purchase a larger dutch oven.

Completely impressed Apr 14, 2009 Even though this is a camp dutch oven, I couldn't wait to use it and so tried it in my regular kitchen oven. We live in the COLD northeast and I just didn't feel like braving the elements....
It was easy to put in the regular oven. Just put the feet right through your rack. It sat there very sturdy.
Terrific results! I used a recipe that came in the recipe book that was included. Chicken and rice. My whole family loved it.
The DO was easy to clean. I just rinsed it in hot water with minimal scrubbing. Dried with a towel, and set it in my still warm oven to make sure it was competely dry. After about 20 minutes drying-time I wiped it with some Pam.
This size was perfect for my family of four. I originally wanted to get a 12" DO, because it seems that most recipes call for this size. Now I'm not sure I want to go any bigger (and heavier) for camping. I don't NEED the extra room for more food, and you can't easily store leftovers while camping. If my family was larger, or I had two teenage boys instead of 2 little girls the 12" would probably be appropriate.....
However....I loved this DO so much, I'll probably eventually get the 12" so that I can use two at a time. Main meal in one...dessert in another....
This is the third Lodge cast iron piece I have tried in the last week and I have to say that I am completely impressed. I wish I would have discovered cast iron sooner.
Looking forward to using it tent camping this summer.
