5Strong Construction, Good Design, Comfortable, Awesome!  Feb 21, 2011
By JoshuaRM
I bought these trekking poles for a snowshoeing trip on Mt Rainier. Because of how amazing my MSR Lightning Ascent showshoes are, I decided to start pole shopping for MSR poles. I made a wonderful purchase with these poles. The metal of the pole is very strong, the collapsible design makes the poles very easy to pack in my suitcase and even inside my backpack. I got 2 pairs of these poles -- 1 pair for me (6' 1" tall) and 1 pair for my girlfriend (5' 4" tall). The pole has at least several inches more pole than I need and can be set at a length more than a foot shorter than my girlfriend needs. Truly a versatile pole and comfortable and natural to use as one-size-fits-all.

The snow gaskets are the only piece than need to be "assembled", per se. That is,.. you must push the snow gaskets onto the metal settings for them and then twist them until they lock into position. If you simply push the snow gaskets into position and do not twist them, the gaskets will seem to be secure but with some pressure they will pop off. So, remember to twist the gaskets until they lock. If you flip the pole upside down while you put the snow gaskets on, you will quickly see the groves in the rubber gaskets to allow for the quarter turn and you will see and feel the gasket lock into position once twisted.

For only $80, I got a steal on these poles. They are easily as good of quality as the $110 / $130 trekking poles. Comfortable, durable, and versatile. I expect they will last a long time.

4Denali poles  Aug 14, 2010

Okay, honestly, I would have given this product a rating of 5 stars except for one little thing: you have to attach the gaskets to the poles yourself, and if you don't do it correctly, you will lose them. I thought I had attached both of these properly, but on my first snowshoe trip with them, one of the gaskets was lost in the snow. My husband & I retraced our steps, but never found the missing piece.

I haven't called to see if I can get a replacement from the company, but I don't anticipate there will a problem. If there is, I will update this review.

For the record, the poles themselves are light & of great quality & I am looking forward to many happy treks together. Also, if you're looking for snowshoes, MSR Denali are the BEST I've ever used! Our scout troop uses them, my daughter & I have red ones, and my eldest son & husband have black. Eventually our other 3 kids will have their own too.

5Looks good, but no snow here yet!  Jan 21, 2012

I'm fairly confident these poles will live up to MSR's traditional quality, but haven't been able to test them in actual snow yet. They look well built and appropriately designed for their intended use.

A few notes on some difficulties experienced by other reviewers:

These are multi-season poles -- trekking poles in the spring-summer-fall and snowshoe poles in the winter. They are more convenient than nonadjustable poles because they can be telescoped to a small configuration and transported/stored more conveniently. They twist counterclockwise (as you look down the pole) to lock and the locking function appears to be well designed (which is very important). I would take seriously the directions which warn you NOT TO LUBRICATE the poles. This would likely cause grit to stick to the poles and get carried inside, ruining the locking mechanism.

In the summer you simply want poles and don't need snow baskets. That's why the baskets are removable. (Note: these are "BASKETS", not "gaskets" or "fins" as some people have called them elsewhere). In the winter, you definitely need baskets if there is snow on the ground as otherwise you'll plant a pole and end up at the bottom of a snow drift. To secure them, you line them up at the bottom with the concave side facing down, push them onto the bottom of the pole, then twist until they lock (works something like a childproof medicine bottle cap). In order to do that, you will have to lock both sections of the poles to give you enough purchase to twist them home. If you don't push AND twist, they WILL come off and get lost in the snow and you'll have to order new ones. Amazon does not seem to carry replacement baskets, but REI does -- they're about 7 - 8 bucks for a pair. Don't buy replacements unless you're sure they fit MSR poles (or Komperdell -- apparently MSR and Komperdell share the same attachment system). I would get the "Large Snowflake Baskets".

This is equipment on which your life may depend. You should be fully familiar with the fitting and operation of these poles and other critical equipment BEFORE you take them out into the wilderness beyond cell phone coverage (joke). The search and rescue people will thank you for this -- buy them a beer when you get back into town and they might even love you.

5WOW. Just WOW!  Oct 06, 2011
By Ana Luiza Welch "TIPSY GIPSY"
I purchased 2 sets of MSR Denali III Trekking Poles in the beginning of summer for my husband and I.
We've been hiking in Colorado and Utah all summer long.
They are light weight, retractable, the handles are comfortable to hold.
We do some serious hiking and this poles have been tested to their limit. My husband is very heavy, really a big guy and still the poles didn't collapse or break.
Going up, going down, crossing creeks... can't hike without them!
Looking forward for this winter, when we will go snow shoeing!
