Light, easy to use, and pretty dependable Aug 19, 2005
By Arthur Digbee I've been using this water filter system for three years now. It's light and easy to use. Including setup, I can fill 4-5 Nalgene bottles in 10 minutes or so, without my arms getting fed up with the repetitive motion of pumping. It attaches easily to a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle, so I'd recommend a couple of those if you don't have them already.
Like any other filter, it gets slower with use, so take care of it. Do get the silt stopper and be sure to carry a replacement filter for any extended trip. I have found that in some locations (Isle Royale for example) I spent a lot more time backwashing the silt stopper and the filter took a beating. Our camp neighbors were having even more trouble with their filters (different brand), so I didn't feel too bad about my minor troubles.
Replacement filters aren't cheap, but then neither are any of the alternative filters out there. The cleaning brush is easy to use but doesn't seem to help that much in improving flow speed as the filter slows down. The unit responds well to being cleaned up when you get home and stored broken down.

Doesn't hold up in severe conditions May 23, 2008
By Michael R. Harmon Good water filter if you are going to be around non-silted water sources. I took it out on the Middle Fork Salmon on a self-support kayak trip during the spring when the water was muddy from all water sources. The new filter clogged within the first 5 gallons and the pump mechanism snapped. I'm planning to return it. I've used it in cleaner water conditions and it was fine...but was really let down that it failed me when the going got rough and I needed clean water.

Good product but can be troublesome Mar 27, 2008
By Farmboy the sweetwater microfilter can be a lifesaver on the trail, but only if it is properly used. It worked the first day of backpacking but would not pump the next morning. It had to be cleaned out thuroughly, and then it worked. The filter must be pumped dry before storage, or it will clog. Overall it is a great, lightweight product making it easier on any backpacker.
RTFM

Sweetwater does the job Aug 12, 2006
By Jim Johnson Bought two Sweetwater filter pumps to take on a 4-day float trip (one as a backup). I didn't need the backup, but the filter I did use was obviously getting close to stopped-up by the end of the float. I probably could have gotten more use from it by using the enclosed brush to clean it; I didn't because the float ended before I quite needed to. Summary: I'd recommend this product. I'd also recommend carrying a backup.

Missing O-ring Dec 26, 2007
By W. Embry The Sweetwater Microfilter was received with a critical part missing. An o-ring that seals the pump and filter housing was missing. I e-mailed the manufacture asking for an o-ring to be mailed to my address. The response was: Thanks for contacting Cascade Designs Inc. I'm sorry to hear that your Sweetwater was missing a part. We don't have replacement parts for that filter, mainly because the way it is manufactured. Since you just purchased it, the best thing to do is to take it back to the store and exchange it for a new one.
Going to be dificult to take this back since it was an on-line order.
