Excellent Quality, easy to use. Apr 29, 2011
By FMC If you smartly purchased the most excellent Platypus Insulator with Big-Zip, you'll notice it doesn't come with a shut-off Valve; this will fit the bill and works great. However, if you purchase the Big-Zip bladder without the insulator kit, it comes with the shut-off. Also, you can buy the Big-Zip Tube Kit and it will come with a shut-off valve which may be a better value if you want to make a long hose attachment with a couple quick-disconnects for car travel.
Warning, don't try to force a tube off of this if cold, it seals very well and will break (from experience). Just run hot water over the tube/valve and it will come off with a bit of elbow grease.
A prepared person will always carry items to repair hydration system so carry extra valves/tubes/quick-disconnects etc.
Oh, and if you've never used Platypus; the bladders/tubes/valves have a great clean taste!

Expensive but essential Apr 13, 2011

This handy little valve prevents the water from accidentally spilling everywhere. No matter how careful I am with my gear, an unprotected bite valve will eventually leak, either miles from a water source or all over my down sleeping bag when it's cold and rainy. Not safe.
The smooth end slips onto the bite valve while the grooved end fits into the water hose. If you have trouble fitting the valve onto the hose, run some hot water over the last two inches of the hose, dry it off, then gradually insert the valve. You may need to run hot water over the hose several times before you get the valve all the way on. Get it seated snugly so there is no gap left to collect dirt, debris and bacteria.
For the price of a platypus bladder, this on/off valve should be included in the setup (some of the platypus competitors include it at no extra cost).
functional, but a little hard to grasp and turn Apr 29, 2010
By Denver York item works as designed. it is difficult to turn on and off because there is no handle or such.

I added this part to my hydration system. It works great! The color is blue and clear, not like the photo supplied. Cascade Design website has image of the part.
GREAT addition May 05, 2009
By Heather Choi You'd think with the high price of the platypus insulator, this would come with it.
It makes the hose easier to drinking out of due to the angle this valve creates and the shut off function is great.
Your platypus hydration system isn't complete without one of these!
