3Nice if you want a spotlight, but you can hack it  Jul 29, 2008
By reluctant techie
The center portion of the beam is ridiculously tight and nonadjustable. I am going to rig up a diffuser to make this lamp appropriate for close-up task lighting but one should be integrated.
Kudos to Princeton Tec for making an affordable regulated waterproof 1 watt headlamp, though. Everything else is A-OK.

UPDATE: search online for "modified Princeton Tec Eos" to find out how to change the LED in this headlamp to one with more light spill so it doe3snt look as much like a spotlight. the new led is more efficient and runs cooler as well. This mod combined with freshly charged 2700mah rechargeable batteries makes this headlamp perform very very well at a price that can't be beat.

5Fantastic!  Jul 02, 2006
By M. Arms "qltngmom"
The ESO headlamp is extremely versatile! I bought one for myself for when I do hand quilting, but have ended up using it as a reading light (I pack it whenever I travel), when the power goes off (it's a great hands-free light), and when doing repairs or painting around the house. I gave one to my husband for Christmas and he LOVES it! Now I'm going to order one for my son who does many handy-man chores around the house.

Using only 2 AAA batteries makes it convenient. It's worth it's weight in gold!!

5Dangerous Places Require The Use of Both Hands  Sep 28, 2005
By Howard H. Skwer
I was walking a trail across quicksand mud flats to a river bank with boards placed over the worst spots, pitch black and scary. Carrying fishing gear in one hand and a trekking pole in the other leaves no way to carry a flashlight or shine it about. A headlamp was the logical answer. The Princeton Tec EOS may have the brightest option and I kept coming back to it, while shopping through the maze of offerings. Backpacker Magazine loved it and some on-line reviewers gave it 5 star ratings. Ok, I bought it and have used it once in a dangerous pre-dawn trek. It worked perfectly , just as described, and I think it will be the beggining of a beautiful relationship.

5Beam good for Bike, Repair service ok  Sep 01, 2009
By Hugh Macdonald "computer magician"
The newest version of this (I own 3) has a frosted lens giving a more diffused even spread light beam. For my bike I liked the old brighter "spot" in the middle to focus on some pothole, but the broad even spread is probably better. It is a bit yellower than the old one which was blueish. No other 1w units (I have three from China) have as even a beam -- although the last one was close as it seems Luxeon now supplies a pretty good lens with their leds. Non-Luxeons are not as good.
The best feature about the EOS is the regulated light and the button on/off action. With EOS you set the mode, bright, med, low, blinking at the startup. Then after 2 seconds another press of the button turns it off. This is how you want it if you turn it on, use it, then you want to turn it off. You don't want it cycling through all the remaining modes until you get off. You know for sure after a few seconds that a button press turns it off.
The best of the cheaper China versions always cycles through the modes. Starts at med, then high, then blink, then off. Starting at med is better than the EOS starting at bright. Med is brighter than most one or two or three led headlamps -- I tried them all in a store. The China ones have to press through each other modes to get it off.
The regulated light means you consume a fixed 250 ma for hi, 80ma for med, and 20 for low until the battery becomes too dead to supply this. When the batteries can no longer supply 250ma (on hi) the current will drop lower and lower until it is no different from med and eventually low. I use this to tell me how the batteries are doing: If there is no difference between hi and med I know the batteries can only give 80ma -- time to get a recharge.
I use rechargable NiMh 800 or 1000mah AAA batteries. While lower in voltage they supply the current better. Use the low self-discharge types if you want it as a flashlight, i.e. don't use it all the time. HOWEVER, when they get weak they will go dead soon! Alkalines fade slowly.
The battery case is superior, easy and high quality and easy to open (compared to China versions with easy to bend battery contacts and non-waterproof button and hard to open case).
One EOS unit's switch failed. I had to google to find out how to send it in -- they need an RMA. The info is on the package also. Once over the bureacracy hump, they replaced it promptly. The China units have no guarantee.

5Excellent all-purpose headlight  Nov 06, 2007
By penlight
Excellent headlight. strong white light. the Luxeon LED 1watt is surprisingly powerful for a single LED bulb. It is way brighter than your standard flashlight. The Luxeon LED is also way brighter than standard LED flashlights which i find barely useful for anything important. I use it now for pretty much everything around the house that requires 2 hands like fixing my computer, changing my car oil, and working in tight areas or in the basement.

I also have one in each car for emergencies. the 3 AAA last a long time as I haven't changed them since I purchased this 2 years ago. these are just alkaline, but the lithiums would likely last even longer. weather-resistant, headband-adjustable, swivel to adjust the aim of the light. this is perfect. I've bought more as gifts for other people and they love it too.

flashlightreviews.com is where i first found out about it.
