My Workhorse Jan 29, 2007
By Fern This recent purchase was for a gift. I have had mine for about 2 years with almost daily use -- doing maintenance around my (rural) property -- yard work and equipment usage and maintenance. It is very reliable under hot, cold and wet conditions. I use the low beam (3 LED) most often. However, it does not take long for the light output of the 3 LED to get noticeably weaker using alkaline batteries. The high output long range single LED seems to last longer even when the 3 LED light is diminished. I've switched to NiMH rechargeables which serves me better since I can charge the batteries often (and not have to put up with using the weaker light output until I had close to exhausted the alkalines). As for maintenance of this headlamp, I occasionally wash and submerge the whole flashlight in a sink to clean the straps. (I wish the straps were removable so I can just put them in the washer.) Recently, one of the 3 LEDs started to blink (like a strobe light) and then died. I sent it back to Princeton Tec and they sent me a new one immediately. I am quite pleased with this flashlight.

Best headlamp so far Aug 15, 2008
By Peter Paul van Dijk As a conservation biologist working on frogs, salamanders, geckos, snakes and other small critters with nocturnal habits, and a dedicated amateur photographer, headlamps for night work are essential for me. This one is my current favourite, has been for a few years now. It can just about illuminate a small animal while I'm focusing a bulky SLR camera with large top-mounted flash - always a tricky situation getting a light to shine past that big flash at your forehead. It's rainshower-proof. It's about as comfortable as a headlamp could be. The hi-power light output is good for field work, to see things in good detail at your feet or a few yards up ahead, without washing it out in excessively bright light. It's not powerful enough for spotlighting owls or mammals in the distance - get a large heavy halogen for that. The low-power LEDs setting is fine for making notes or general navigating on the trails. The best feature is the battery usage: three penlites will last me for over a full week in the field. Perfect for expeditions - leave home loaded with a fresh set of batteries and a set of spares (just in case), and that's it. A massive advance over earlier halogens burning through four penlites in a single evening, or three C-cells lasting 2-3 nights. That's a lot less weight to check in and carry around, and a lot fewer batteries to buy and recycle (where that's possible).
In conclusion: one of the first pieces of equipment that I pack for any field trip. And while I hear great things about Princeton Tec's customer service, I can't confirm this from experience because I've not had failures with their products in nine years of using a variety of models.

Great Light!! Jan 11, 2009

"farm girl"
I bought this as a gift for my fiancee since I'd heard him mention this brand before. And, just like the other reviewers, we LOVE it! In fact, I love it so much I'm thinking of buying one for me! Amazon was so fast and they had the best price on this headlamp.
We've been using for more than a month now on a daily basis as we have a small farm and need it every evening for the chores; the light has not dulled and we have not had to replace any batteries yet. The headband is very easy to adjust (I'm only 5'4" and he's 6'1") and it's easy for us to adjust back for ourselves when the other uses it. The light is also very easy to adjust for pointing the beam - it stays where you want it. Even though the battery pack is in the back, it does not feel bulky at all, even for me. This is a fantastic light all the way around and I would recommend it to anyone needing a good all purpose headlamp!
Excellent light, made in the U.S.A. and super customer service Jan 11, 2012

I bought this light several years ago and use it all the time in the garage when working on cars and bikes. It was working fine when all of a sudden it died. Come to find out the Duracell AA batteries leaked and destroyed the inside of the battery holder. This is the second time I had Duracells leak -- not long ago they ruined a multi-hundred dollar Nikon 800 flash!
Anyway, I emailed Princeton to see how much it would cost to fix it and I asked if maybe I should just buy another headlamp instead. That's when they said the Yukon HL had a lifetime guarantee! They gave me an RMA number and I just sent it off for repair.
Pretty amazing stuff and yet another good reason to buy American and keep our citizens gainfully employed! And besides -- it puts out great light. The spotlight is perfect for working on motorcycles and the area light, although dimmer, is good for wide areas. I beat the heck out of the thing and other than the leaking batteries, it's been going strong for many years.
In fact, I was surprised to learn they still make the Yukon HL, which says a lot for the original design. Good stuff!
By the way, you don't really need the headlamps with blinking lights or 2,4,6,8 LEDs. All you really need is high and low power; anything else just adds to the confusion and hassle when you have to hit the switch multiple times to go back and forth between LED power. Who knows what the difference is between, say, 2 LEDs and 4? Let's face it: you'll be using it on high most of the time anyway. So save your money and avoid hassle -- in the case of headlamps, more options aren't necessarily better.
Nice & Bright - A life time Guarantee May 18, 2011
By Lynn Ressler I use this headlamp when I'm cleaning up a work site after dark to pick up my tools, when camping, or in any situation you might use a flashlight for. I usually keep it in my car in case of emergencies, I figure its way better than a flashlight. Flashlights require you to use one hand to hold the flashlight, and you only have one left to do your job with. Headlamps are so much better, you have both hands free to do your work! Far and away this headlamp is much brighter than the headlamps you might buy at a big box store for $10-$20. They don't even compare. This light is superior is every way including brightness.
The headlamp has one button above the light in the front that toggles between low light (3 blueish white LED's) and high light (one center mounted brighter, whiter LED) and off. Its easy to operate and controls are simple and fool proof.
I've owned two princeton tec led headlamps, both very high quality. I bought the original one for somewhere around $60-$70 in 2004 from an Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) store. It lasted me at least 3 or 4 years before it developed a short in the wire and the light wouldn't turn on. I was annoyed that I had spent so much money on the headlamp and that it no longer worked, because when it was working it was perfect.
I remembered that the box said it had a lifetime guarantee. I was skeptical. So many of these guarantee's have disclaimers. I went to the princeton tec website, found their 1800 number and called customer service. The gave me a RMA # (I think it stands for return merchandise authorization #) which I had to include on the box and inside the box with the lamp. I mailed back the headlamp (minus the batteries) and they sent me a new one sometime around 2008. My original model was bit different (they no longer manufactured it) but they sent me a brand new Yukon HL.
Last summer (2010) I was bringing the headlamp in from my car and I tossed it onto the floor beside my shoes. I've never taken particular care to be gentle on the headlamp and its always held up. Well this time it hit the floor and the battery compartment housing shattered. It would no longer hold batteries in and the electric terminals were loose and wouldn't stay in place because the plastic housing was broken. I put off calling customer support for 6+ months because I figured it was my fault it broke and they would not honor their warranty because it was "abused".
Just this week I called the customer service 1800 number and was told it has a lifetime warranty. All I needed was to mail it back with the RMA # and they'd replace it. So its now in the mail and I'll be getting another replacement headlamp.
Are they expensive? Yes, but they are worth every penny AND are guaranteed for life!
