4Pretty darn good  Dec 29, 2007
By William Blackford L. "Cavalcade"
This pack surprised me by fitting my medium adult male torso very well-- I had expected a fancy bookbag to gift a child. It is well sewn and designed; it has a sheet frame not stays. It also has a hydration pocket and port behind the frame and oversize mesh lower side pockets that will easily fit a 32 Oz/1 L. bottle. The upper pockets are pretty large and have nice rain shields; there are two compression straps over each upper pocket and strap attachments on the bottom for roll up gear, plus an ice ax loop on bottom and hand grip on top. There is a zippered interior divider for the sleeping bag compartment. The back pocket is a double pocket under the daisy chain loops; the interior pocket has the typical bookbag mini slots, pockets and clips (which I can take or leave) but the outer is about right for stashing a windbreaker. And there is a small lower mesh pocket on the sleeping bag 'door' where something wet might dry-- like your stream crossing sandals-- and cover pocket on bottom. All these well done pockets add to the utility.

Overall I felt this seemed big for the rated 2200+ capacity and (now that I plan to keep it for me) I will use it for weekend overnights where I carry a bivy and bag and don't need all the capacity of my big pack. The Wenger trademark everywhere is a bit overdone but there is nothing cheap about this bag.

Bottom line-- very, very good value for the buck. I gave it four stars only because I bought this too late to field test but I am confident it will not let me down next season. Oh, and if you did want a book bag for college weight textbooks, this will do nicely.

Addendum: Just to see I tried stuffing my bulkiest mummy bag (a Polarguard type) into the bottom compartment and it fit- tightly. My old Blue Kazoo down bag will have room to spare though.
